Photographer’s Note
In 1974 the Fort Worth Art Museum commissioned me to photograph the Fort Worth fat stock show and rodeo. The resulting photographs were exhibited in the museum’s 1975 Great American Rodeo Show, which was conceived and directed by Richard Koshalek, assisted by Anne Livet and Jay Bellolli.
Convinced that these photographs formed the nucleus for a book, I sought and received assistance from Jay BelloIli, then the museum’s director, and Anne Livet to photograph the livestock show and rodeo in 1976 and 1977. My thanks go to the Fort Worth Art Museum, Richard Koshalik, Anne Livet, and Jay BelloIli for their initial and continuing help with this project. I thank Tom Consilvio
for making the fine enlargements used in the book. I also thank Tod Papageorge for his assistance in editing the photographs and for sequencing diem.
Although the photographs were taken at the livestock show and rodeo, the book does not presume to be a complete catalog of all the events. Rather, it is a very subjective coverage of the events, faces, and byplay that I found to be dramatic.
